Live Like a Local

Your Maltese Host Family Experience

Want the most authentic and budget-friendly way to live in Malta? A host family is it. It’s your fast-track to practicing English 24/7 and diving deep into local culture. Seriously, students who stay with families just learn faster.

Maltese hosts are known for being incredibly welcoming and friendly, always happy to help you settle in. They take pride in their homes (think: clean and comfy) and often love to cook. The best part? The connections you make. These aren’t just hosts; they often become lifelong friends you’ll be DMing for years to come.

What You Can Expect From Your Host (The Perks)

Your host family is here to make your stay awesome. Here’s what they’ll provide:

Meals

All your booked meals are covered. On full-board?
That's breakfast, a packed lunch, and a proper evening dinner.

Family Dinners

You'll eat with the family —
it's the best time to chat and practice your English!

Packed Lunch

A typical lunch to-go includes: two fresh rolls with a good filling,
one piece of fruitm and a bottle of water.

Laundry

They'll help you out by washing one load of your clothes per week.

Fresh and Clean

Expect clean bed sheets every week and fresh towels at least twice a week.

Your own Key

You'll get a key to the house so you can be independent.
(In the rare case a key isn't provided, someone will be always home to let you in).

Applying for Your Schengen VisaFor Malta

If you need a visa, it’s important to apply at the correct embassy or consulate. The rule is simple: apply at the diplomatic mission of your main destination.

  • Is Malta your main or only destination?
You’ll need to apply for your visa at a Maltese embassy or consulate.
  • Visiting several Schengen countries for a similar length of time?
If Malta is the first country you will enter in the Schengen Area, you should apply at a Maltese embassy or consulate.
  • What if there’s no Maltese embassy in my country?
Don't worry! Malta has agreements with other Schengen countries to handle visa applications on our behalf.
You can apply at the designated embassy or consulate representing Malta in your country,
and they will process your visa for you.

How to Be an Awesome Guest (The House Vibe)

Living with a family is a two-way street built on mutual respect. Here’s how you can be a great guest and make sure everyone has an amazing experience.

Respect & Communication

Be Open

You're here to embrace a new culture and your family’s way of life! This includes trying their food.
(please don't expect them to cook specific dishes from your home country).

Chat About Curfew

The standard home time is 11 PM. Need to be out later?
Just communicate with your hosts beforehand.
(If you're under 18, this also needs to be cleared with your parents or group leader).

Guests

Want to have a friend over?
Always ask your host family for permission first; It's their home, after all.

Be on Time

Meals are a big part of family life.
Please be on time for breakfast and dinner, or let them know if you'll be late or skipping a meal.

Keep it Down

Be mindful of noise, especially at night.
Respect other students and family members who might be sleeping or working.

Your Space & House Rules

Keep it Tidy

Your room is your space —
please keep it tidy.

Shared Spaces (Bathroom/Kitchen)

Clean up after yourself every time. If you share a bathroom,
you'll get your own spot for your toiletries.

Ask First

Want to use the kitchen for your own cooking, or use the washing machine, iron,or
other house equipment? Just ask for permission first.

Smoking

Smoking is generally not allowed inside. Check with your family about their specific rules
(e.g., if it's okay on a balcony).

Oops! (Damages)

You are responsible for any damages you cause or items you lose in the home, so please
be careful with their property.
